Eligibility

Membership in the American Society of Interior Designers is open to persons in the interior design profession and related fields who have fulfilled certain education, experience and examination requirements.

The appellation for Professional Member and designations for other Members may be used only with the member's own name. A member may in no way imply, through advertising of other means, that employees of his of her staff are members of ASID unless that is in fact the case, and then may be identified only by the appellations or designations consistent with their status in ASID.

Applicants may not use the ASID appellation in any form until notified of acceptance in writing by ASID National Headquarters. Applicants found misusing the appellation risk chances of being approved for membership.

Professional Members

Professional Members of ASID satisfy rigorous acceptance standards. They must have a combination of accredited design education and/or full-time work experience, and pass the two-day National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) examination. Professional membership in ARIDO (Canada) or CODDI (Puerto Rico) is transferable to ASID upon proof of said membership.

  • Four- or five-year Bachelor's degree with major in interior design or architecture
  • Two or three-year degree or certificate in interior design
  • A minimum of six years of full-time work in interior design or architecture.

Successful completion of the NCIDQ exam entitles practitioner members to advance to professional membership.
